AN AUSSIE CHRISTMAS - Kindergarden and Year 1

I thought posting this artwork now might inspire some of you to begin the artwork and build upon it as the weeks lead up to the end of Term4 and Christmas.

The images that I am using as inspiration came from Pinterest and were originally in png format. I have selected the cutest koala and I made an outline drawing of it.

This outline drawing will be photocopied on A3 watercolour paper. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of colours rather than copying what the see on the on the original image.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Have the outline drawing photocopied onto eitherA4 or A3 watercolour paper.

2. You will notice that the koala is missing his Christmas hat. With a lead pencil, students need to draw their own Christmas hat onto the baby koala. They can use the original image as inspiration or the teacher can do a simple directed drawing of a Christmas hat that the students can follow along and draw onto their artwork. Its the teacher's choice as to how the Christmas hat gets onto the artwork.

3. Using a permanent black marker, trace over the outline drawing (fine motor skills). As the black marker is permanent it will remain clearly visible during the application of the watercolour.

3. Fill in the background using a single colour as later on, students will be able to write a Christmas message to the recipient of their artwork.

4. Using acrylic paint markers (Posca pens) add extra line work to the artwork. avoid tracing directly on top of the black marker lines.

5. Using white  colouring pencils, colour the fur edge of the Christmas hat. An option is to use white acrylic paint markers, which will give a better result but may not be advisable with such young students. I leave that to the judgment of the teacher who knows their students best.

6. Now the next bit is messy but the students will love it - its glitter!!!! Place white adhesive glue where the student wants a particular colour glitter. Eg: red on the hat. Some green on the gum leaves, other colours in the flowers. The inclusion of glitter creates a very Christmassy appearance and lifts the aesthetic quality of the artwork

I am sorry that i dont have a sample artwork to show you but I will eventually add one to this post.
