Alphabet Drawing
This art activity combines drawing with literacy and works with any age group in primary school. You will need some printed alphabet pages (which I got from a free site on Pinterest), lead pencils, some erasers, fine tip Artline pens and watercolour pencils.
Each student gets issued with an alphabet page. Distribution should be random and no swapping!!
OPTION 1: You need to take the students to the Library so that they can research an animal that begins with their chosen letter. They need to draw their animal onto paper so it can then be transferred onto the alphabet page.
OPTION 2: Most classrooms now have access to the Internet and have printers in the room, so student could do their research in the classroom. This is what I did with my students.
The animal is drawn up large onto the page lightly in lead pencil. Rubbing out should be avoided as much as possible as it can remove the printed work also.
Students should be shown how to simulate the texture of fur, scales, skin and so on in lead pencil. They also need to learn how to shade and create tone (press hard, press light).
Once the image is completed, students need to shade around the animal in watercolour pencil, one colour only. They need to also create tone with the watercolour pencil (as shown in the example).
Students can then write on the top or bottom of the artwork, their letter and what that letter is for. For example, P is for possum.
