ARTWORK 5: Layered Self Portrait - Scrapbook Style
Finally, we took their grid self portrait drawing and created a layered mixed media artwork that was called, "It's Me". Was so impressed with what the students did. They loved the idea of layering media, adding collage and writing directly onto their artwork.
PROCEDURE:
Preparing the Portrait:
1. Firstly, make a self portrait grid drawing. Shade with lead pencil to created elements of realism.
2. Leave about a .5cm gap from the edge of the portrait and draw a line that goes around the portrait.
3. Draw a second line about 1cm wide that follows the first line.
4. Colour in this 1cm wide line with black marker. The portrait drawing will appear to have a white and black outline.
5. Cut the portrait out along the edge of the black marker.
Preparing the Background/Base:
6. We used a piece of A3 light coloured cardboard as the base to work from. The light colour added the "first layer" to the artwork. I didn't want to start with a white base layer.
7. On the cardboard, I had students draw their favourite shapes in white oil crayon with diluted coloured drawing ink over the top. The white crayon created a "resist effect".
8. On top of that, we did some mono printing with bubble wrap, leaves, anything we could find that would create a print.
9. I had students make prints on other paper so those prints could be applied later on as a collage layer.
10. I had students cut pics from magazines of things that they liked - food, sport, etc.
11. Students had the option of cutting the letters of their name from magazines, writing their name freehand or purchasing scrap booking letters. Some did a combination of all their options.
12. Students made their own decisions as to when they glued their portrait onto the layered surface. Some did to quite early in their artmaking process, others waited until they were almost finished. I wanted students to make their own decision about the layering of media and materials - where, when, how, which media, printing, etc.
NOTE: I will definitely be doing this with my primary school kids. with one particular class I have, I can stretch it out over a few weeks....yay!!!
Here are some of the results. I was super impressed.....
