FURRY FELINES - Texture Drawing

My sample artwork...

STUDENT ARTWORKS 20.2.2018
Not bad for students who are only 11 years old!!!!!

PROCEDURE:
1. Discussion about What is Texture? and types of texture - tactile and visual. What is a feline?
2. WORKSHEETS - students will complete a simple worksheet based on  visual texture.
3. Students issued with a picture of a lion, cheetah, leopard or tiger. They will select the picture they like.

4. Students given a piece of cardstock in the colour of their choice. I have selected a number of earthy toned card stock  as the colours reflect the black and white watercolour pencils really well.
5. Discussion about drawing big and using the picture as a guide. The picture is a little bit smaller than the coloured cardstock. They can't trace it as the cardstock is too thick!!!
6. Sketching the picture is done in watercolour pencil, the colour depending on the colour of the cardstock.
7. Students are guided through the drawing process, beginning with building up toned areas drawing in black. Students are shown how to draw "fur" using little lines in a particular direction. Emphasis is made on the direction of the fur as this adds to the realism of the image.
8. If a student selects a dark coloured cardstock, all sketching and drawing should be done in white watercolour pencil.
9. The creation of the image takes time and students need to be guided in not rushing or making fur lines that are too big or messy.
10. OPTIONAL: To highlight certain parts of my drawing, I added some white posca pen lines then lightly shaded over them to tone them down. They were too raw and bright. I also added some black posca pen lines in and around the eyes.
