These artworks are fantastic!!!

Students love to paint so I thought we would start to learn how to apply paint to a canvas as a "real artist" would. I also wanted to teach students about colour groups other than the basic primary and secondary colours. Painting is not my thing, I'm pretty average at it so I decided to make the artwork mixed media.

PROCEDURE:
I found some images of monsters on the net (free-to-use) and printed them onto a piece of A4 canvas as a black, white and tonal grey image. Students will get to choose a monster from 4 options and have an accompanying coloured image to use when painting the little canvas.

Students will investigate TERTIARY COLOURS and understand how they are created. They will also look at COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS, shades and tints.

Before commencing their painting, students will look in depth at ANALOGOUS COLOURS. They will need to select one analogous colour group (a 4 colour group) which they will use to complete their monster painting. The teacher should give a demonstration on  how to hold the paint brush, how to apply paint to the canvas using the WET-ON-WET TECHNIQUE and how to mix a TONE or TINT by blending black or white with the HUE (colour) on the canvas.  This is also a wet-on-wet technique but save on wasted paint and time with premixing.

Students do not have to use the same colours as those on the coloured Resource Image. The original image changed as I started to paint, it looks a little different now.
The painting stage completed using green, yellow-green, green, blue-green and blue. For the eyes I chose RED with tints and tones of red. Red is also the complementary colour (opposite) of green.

The final stage of the artwork is to add some shading and toning with watercolour pencils. Using the pencils will allow students to have better control when applying shading to various areas of their artwork. They will also have the Resource Image as a guide as to where to add the shading and which colours to use.
The outlining was done with an Artline pen and a thickish black markers. Students will need direction when outlining as the lines need to be thin and thickened up where desired. A heavy hand is NOT needed with the outlining.
White Posca pen was used to highlight the teeth and to create additional line work.
Student artworks in the next post........
