BUSY BEES - Mixed Media Artwork with Collage

Image
I just love doing mixed media stuff with the kids as they seem less inclined to worry about realism and perfection. It took me 4 hours from start to finish to create this sample artwork so it will be a full day art lesson with my primary school kids. I forgot to take progress shots so the instructions will be pretty "wordy"....sorry.... I NSTRUCTIONS: The artwork is created in 3 parts, starting with the background. A. BACKGROUND: 1. On an A3 piece of cardboard or thick paper, glue down a collage of blue paper. I found a vintage dictionary paper on Pinterest (free to use and the letter B) and coloured it in Photoshop. You need to use thick paper or card stock as the collaged papers need support.   2. I then placed the bee image on top so I could get an idea of where it would be in the artwork (composition) and how I would apply the Vaseline (petroleum jelly). The Vaseline creates a resist when paint is applied later on. 3. I applied the Vaseline with my f

Artworks Created Using Ipad Apps

Image
Here is an artwork I created by importing an image into various apps to build up the effects created.....started with a portrait photo.... ARTWORK: 1. Portrait is imported into the PERCOLATOR app and is turned into circles...... 2. Percolator portrait imported into FOOLPROOF app and manipulated with various colour effects that have the appearance of paintbrush strokes. 3. Image is then imported into GLAZE app with has a very large number of surface textures that are "painted". Detail of surface texture Detail of surface texture

MICRO MACRO - SKTCH iPad App - Slide Specimens (Art and Science)

Image
I used this app with my Year 7 students when we were looking at micro and macro as themes for artworks. They liked the idea of using "science things" to make artworks. I love this app as it creates a very structured artwork that resemble specimen slides.    The app is called SKTCH.   PROCEDURE:

CUBISM using Ipad App - ChipPhoto

Image
Here are some digital artworks I created when I was stuck on my "technology trip"...... ChipPhoto     After I made the Cubist Portrait, I imported it into another app called PERCOLATOR . It created circles inside the squares which I think added another dimension to the idea of "Cubism".

PRINTMAKING with iPad Apps - Linocut, Silkscreen, Woodblock and Etching

Image
These are fantastic apps for learning about printmaking. I used them with students from Year 7 to Year 10 in Visual Arts. They are really good for "practising" what you want to do before you do it. 1. This app is great and the finished effect really does look like a lino block print!!! You have to "carve" the image yourself. Only drawback is the free app only has 2 or 3 tools but if you purchase the app, you get the lot and there are quite a few. Really good app for learning about "positive' and "negative" lines/space.   I love this app!!!! a really good way to learn about the process of silkscreen printing without all the mess.    There are a lot of Japanese style effects in this app. I like this app but I like black and white images a lot......

IPAD APP - Portraiture and Literacy

Image
I created this artwork with my Year 7 students but it could be very easily adapted for younger students. PROCEDURE: 1. Take a pic of the student and import that pic into the app - WordFoto. NOTE: Students should make a pose with their face that they think describes who they are 2. Have students type in words that describe "What Makes Me Who I am?" using their portrait as a guide to think of words. A simple artwork but lots of fun for littlies......

IPAD APP - Mythological Creatures and Literacy

Image
I don't know why but my Year 8 students really liked the idea of making images using words. I guess it was, at the time, a new way of creating an image that was non-traditional. I didn't get copies of their artworks (stupid me) but they turned out pretty well. The app is called FOTOWORD.   This is my sample artwork that I used to inspire my students. I cheated....I pasted together some images from the net using Art Studio ( iPad app, Apple version of Photoshop) then imported it into WORDFOTO. PROCEDURE: 1. Students are to create their mythological creature as a watercolour drawing. Only one word is to be incorporated into the drawing and that is the name of the creature (in big simple letters). 2. A clear photo is taken of the artwork and imported into the Wordfoto app. 3. I gave my students 1 choice of how to use words (literacy) in their artwork - words that describe their creature 4. Using descriptive words gave them a chance to build up their "describ

PORTRAITURE with IPAD APPS - AutoGraffiti and Vegetable Me

Image
Here are 2 more apps I used with my Year 7 students to create self portraits using technology.   1.  AUTOGRAFFITI   I used this app with my Year 7 students as part of a BODY OF WORK. They had 3 self portrait artworks to create as an assessment task. They really liked the liked using technology as it was visually appealing and the results were instantaneous.   2. VEGETABLE ME   Year 7 - This is a great app as support for studying the works of ARCHIMBOLDI.

IPAD APPS for creating Mythological Creatures.

Image
I saw a request on Facebook by a teacher wanting some information about iPad apps that she could access to make artworks. Back in 2012, I began my phase of incorporation technology into my art programs. Here are some of the apps I used and artworks that I made as samples to show my high school students. These apps are easy to use and could be easily incorporated into a primary school program. There are lots so I will post them over a 2 or  3 posts...or more.... 1. MONSTERPIECES   Students absolutely loved this app and I think it speaks for itself. We used it to create scarry mythological creatures. The class I used it with was mostly boys so it worked really well with them. The girls (only 3) didn't mind the ugly monsters at all.       2. ANIMAL CREATOR   This app is fantastic. I used with my low ability students to create their mythological creature. They then drew this creature onto watercolour paper to complete the assessable task. saved me lots of

SLEEPING KOALAS - White on black drawing

Image
Love the visual impact of using white charcoal pencil on a black background. This is my sample artwork to show the kids. I will show them other sample drawings as well..... INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Discussion is had with students about the artwork samples. What is TONE? What is TEXTURE? How is TONE created? How is TEXTURE created? 2. Students are issued with a sheet of black drawing paper, a RESOURCE IMAGE sheet which has 4 images of sleeping koalas and a white charcoal pencil. A white watercolour pencil can be used as a substitute for white charcoal.    3. On the black paper, students LIGHTLY sketch up the sleeping koala as a line drawing. Students are encouraged to recognise the resource image as a guide and should not attempt to recreate an exact copy. Assistance should be given in helping students with their drawing of the resource image. NOTE: Students need to draw BIG as this makes the task much easier and they are better able to get the proportions of the res
