Year 7 High School - Microscopic Monsters - Mixed Media Painting

I am digging through my old teaching programs now, I have so much stuff, so I'll just keep putting it on......the artwork above was created by a student. I taught this artwork in Year 7, age 12 - 13 years.

HOMEWORK TASK: Students are to find an image of a microscopic creature using the Internet – print and bring to class

PROCEDURE:

1. Microscopic monster is enlarged onto a canvas (45cm x 45 cm or bigger) with an appropriate background – lines and shapes that add to the overall composition of the artwork. All lines are traced over with black marker.
2. LAYER 1: COLOURED INK - Students select the warm or cool colour group and fill in the artwork with only the colours from their selected colour group.
3. LAYER 2: Paint – Student apply  paint using the opposite colours to Layer 1. Paint is applied as dry brush or any expressive technique. It is important not to completely hide the ink layer/colours.
4. LAYER 3:  Paint – Student apply paint using the opposite colours to Layer 1. Paint is applied as dry brush or any expressive technique. It is important not to completely hide the colours from Layer 1 and Layer 2.
5. Redraw the entire artwork to re-establish the outlines with black marker.
6. Using POSCA PENS, add additional line work and colour to the artwork.
7. Outline the microscopic monster with a thick outline – approx 5-6mm.
8. With WHITE POSCA PEN, carefully go around the edge of the black outline of the microscopic monster. This white outline can be made thicker, depending on the overall appearance.

Almost forgot.....this was my source of inspiration. Artist: Cynthia Mosser.
